It depends on whether your birth date falls before or after Chinese New Year, which moves between January 21 and February 20 each year. Someone born February 1, 1995 is a Dog (the year before Chinese New Year on January 31, 1995), not a Pig. This calculator accounts for the lunar cutoff automatically.
What is my element and what does it mean?
Each animal year is paired with one of five elements β Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water β in a 60-year cycle. - Ignoring the Lunar New Year cutoff: The Chinese zodiac year does not start on January 1. Births in January or early-to-mid February usually fall under the previous year's animal.
- Forgetting the element: Saying "I'm a Dragon" tells half the story. A 1976 Fire Dragon and a 1988 Earth Dragon have noticeably different traditional readings.
- Treating it like Western horoscopes: Chinese zodiac assigns a sign by year, not by month. There is no daily or monthly Chinese zodiac sign in the traditional system.
- Assuming Ben Ming Nian is purely bad luck: Modern practice treats it as a year demanding caution and intentional choices, not inevitable misfortune. Wearing red and avoiding major risks are the usual remedies.
