The 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals
Understanding the Chinese Zodiac
The Chinese zodiac, known as Sheng Xiao, is a repeating 12-year cycle where each year is represented by a specific animal and its reputed attributes. Unlike Western astrology which is based on months, the Chinese zodiac is based on years in the lunar calendar. According to legend, the Jade Emperor held a race to determine which animals would be part of the zodiac, and the order of the 12 animals reflects their finishing positions in that race.

The Five Elements
In addition to the animal sign, each year is associated with one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The element cycles every two years, and the combination of animal and element creates a 60-year cycle. Each element influences the basic characteristics of the animal sign. For example, a Wood Rat differs from a Fire Rat or a Water Rat in temperament and fortune. Compare with Western zodiac signs for a complete picture.
Wood represents growth and creativity, Fire represents passion and energy, Earth represents stability and practicality, Metal represents strength and determination, and Water represents wisdom and flexibility.
Yin and Yang
Each animal is also associated with either yin (feminine, receptive energy) or yang (masculine, active energy). The animals alternate between yin and yang: Rat (yang), Ox (yin), Tiger (yang), Rabbit (yin), Dragon (yang), Snake (yin), Horse (yang), Goat (yin), Monkey (yang), Rooster (yin), Dog (yang), Pig (yin).
Chinese New Year Timing
The Chinese zodiac follows the lunar calendar, which means Chinese New Year falls on different dates each year, typically between January 21 and February 20. If you were born in January or early February, you need to check whether you were born before or after Chinese New Year to determine your correct animal sign. This calculator accounts for this, but it's always good to verify for edge cases. Use our Moon Phase Calculator to track lunar cycles.
Compatibility
Chinese astrology considers certain animal signs more compatible than others. Generally, signs that are four years apart are most compatible, while signs that are six years apart may face challenges. For example, Rats are most compatible with Dragons and Monkeys, while they may have difficulties with Horses.
Cultural Significance
The Chinese zodiac is deeply embedded in Chinese culture and is used to determine personality, career fitness, compatibility, and even the most auspicious times for major life events like weddings or business ventures. Many people across East Asia consult their zodiac sign for guidance in daily life, and the zodiac animals appear in art, literature, and celebrations throughout the year.
Your Ben Ming Nian
Your zodiac year, when your animal sign comes around again, is called your "Ben Ming Nian" and is traditionally considered a year of bad luck. People often wear red (considered a lucky color) during their zodiac year to ward off misfortune. However, modern interpretations view it more as a year of change and transformation rather than purely negative. Learn more about your birth date with our Birthday Calculator.
