MPG Calculator
Calculate your vehicle's actual fuel efficiency in miles per gallon. Track your gas mileage over time to monitor vehicle health, compare fuel economy, and identify when your car may need maintenance.
How to Use This MPG Calculator
Fill your gas tank completely, then reset your trip odometer. Drive normally until you need to refuel. At your next fill-up, note the miles driven and gallons needed to refill. Enter these values above to calculate your actual MPG. Optionally add the gas price to see your cost per mile.
What is MPG?
MPG stands for Miles Per Gallon, the standard measure of fuel efficiency in the United States. It tells you how many miles your vehicle can travel on one gallon of fuel. Higher MPG means better fuel economy and lower fuel costs. The average car in the US gets about 25-30 MPG.
MPG Formula
The MPG calculation is simple:
MPG = Distance Traveled / Gallons Used
For metric conversions:
km/L = MPG x 0.425
L/100km = 235.215 / MPG
Factors That Affect MPG
- Driving habits (aggressive acceleration, speeding)
- Tire pressure (underinflated tires reduce MPG)
- Vehicle maintenance (air filters, spark plugs)
- Weather conditions (cold weather reduces efficiency)
- Use of AC and electrical accessories
- Cargo weight and roof racks
- City vs highway driving
Tips to Improve Your MPG
- Maintain steady speeds and avoid rapid acceleration
- Keep tires properly inflated
- Remove unnecessary weight from your vehicle
- Use cruise control on highways
- Avoid excessive idling
- Keep up with regular maintenance
